The Trend in Divorce Rate in South Korea during 1985 - 1996



Abstract
Trends in divorce rates in South Korea are examined using age-specific divorce rates of married women. Number of married women by age from censuses and number of divorces by wife¢¥s age are used as basic data. In general divorce rate is high at younger ages and decreases as women¢¥s age goes up. Age-specific divorce rates increased substanially during 1985-96 period, especially during the later part of the decade. Ages 33-43 experienced higher rates of increase. Total divorce rate for married women age 25 or older, based on age-specific divorce rates, increased 84 percent from 11.96 percent to 21.95 percent during 1985-96 period.
